Throw Away Thursday!

Today I’m excited to share a genius idea that my friend Melissa Reynolds started 2 weeks ago on her Facebook page.  She and a friend of hers were tired of all the clutter and unused items lying around their homes, so they came up with a plan to hold each other accountable and get rid of all that stuff.  It’s a quick, simple plan that’s not overwhelming and I love it!

So here are the rules:

  • Every Thursday fill one shopping bag with items you no longer want or use.  If you’re on a roll and can fill more than one, go for it!
  • The bag MUST leave your home within 24 hours.
  • Donate or recycle as many of the items as you can.

How easy is that?  I’ve tried de-cluttering my house so many times before and I’ve failed every time.  I couldn’t seem to find a large chunk of time to devote to completing the process, but this is totally do-able.

I also think it’s biblical and here are a few reasons why I’m on board:

I truly believe that God wants me to live a simpler, less stress-filled life.  I don’t know about you, but when I look around me and I see clutter and things that I’m not using anymore, I feel overwhelmed, distracted, and downright discouraged.  Walking into my home when things are clean and tidy brings peace and a sense of balance to me and my family.  God wants me to enjoy my home as a blessing, not feel stressed by it.

God wants me to be a good steward of time and money.  Getting rid of unwanted items makes room for items I do need.  This saves me time when I need to find something and requires less of my time to manage it all.  Having less to manage means I have more time to focus on things that are truly important.  Plus it saves me money because I don’t find myself buying duplicates of items that I already had but couldn’t find.

I can bless others.  There may be items lining my shelves, closets, and many other places in my home that could be a blessing to someone else.  God doesn’t want me to hold on to material things in this world; He knows it’s not good for me on so many levels.

So are you ready to join the Throw Away Thursday movement?  Melissa and I would love for you to post your pictures and Throw Away Thursday stories!  Simply “like” Joy Complete on Facebook to share.  Now start filling that bag!
